Mindful Running with SABRE: Find Ease, Rhythm & Awareness

Mindful running is a simple technique that helps you find ease in your movement. Instead of pushing through strain, struggle, or competitiveness, you practice letting go and coming into awareness—step by step, breath by breath.

When you run this way, it can feel replenishing—bringing you back into connection with yourself and with nature.

The SABRE Method

Use SABRE as a quick mental checklist anytime you want to settle into a more mindful, enjoyable run:

  • S = Sure-footed

  • A = Alignment

  • B = Breath

  • R = Relax into Rhythm

  • E = Eye-opening Awareness

S — Sure-footed

Begin at your feet. Notice how the ground feels underneath you and how your feet feel each time they touch down. Play with your stance and cadence until you find a sense of grounding.

If you notice you’re landing heavier on one part of the foot, or favoring one side, make small adjustments so you connect as evenly as possible—building a solid, steady feeling with each foot strike.

A — Alignment

Once you’ve found your foundation, draw awareness up through your body—legs, hips, core, shoulders, head, and arms. Engage your core gently, relax your shoulders away from your ears, and open your chest just a bit.

Check your head position: is your chin jutting forward? If so, draw your head back so it stacks over your shoulders. Visualize a string from tailbone to crown, lifting you as you glide.

And ask yourself: how are you aligned right now—with your movement, with nature, and with your thoughts and intentions?

B — Breath

Now notice your breath. Is it labored or fairly smooth? If you’re pushing so hard that breathing feels like a chore, scale it back. The goal is ease.

Notice where you’re breathing—through your nose, your mouth, or both. You can also experiment with “intentional breath,” where you match your steps to your inhale and exhale.

Try this breath pattern

  • Pick your right or left foot.

  • Each time that foot lands in front, inhale for 2 counts, then exhale for 2 counts.

  • It can sound like: “Sniff, sniff… huff, huff.”

  • On the inhale, gently lift your upper lip toward your nose—like you’re smelling something interesting—to invite more air in.

Most importantly: just notice. You don’t need to force change. Let the breath carry you.

R — Relax into Rhythm

You’re grounded, aligned, and taking in refreshing oxygen—now you can relax into your natural rhythm. Focus helps keep you mindful, and running gives you a powerful way to find that focus from the inside out.

Soften your arms, shoulders, and gaze. Then choose something simple to anchor your attention: a mantra, counting, or a phrase like “this step, this step, this step.” On steep hills, counting can help; on more spacious days, a mantra like “thank you” can deepen a spiritual connection.

There’s no “correct” way—let it unfold moment by moment.

E — Eye-opening Awareness

This is where the magic is. You’ve laid the groundwork for an amazing experience—yes, while running. Now you can open into awareness of what’s around you.

Notice what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. Let your senses bring you into connection—sometimes even into a feeling of bliss. If you’re having trouble finding flow, slow down, walk, and move back through SABRE.

Try this awareness game

  • Pick a number.

  • Pick one of your five senses (for example: #4 + hearing).

  • Stay with that sense until you notice that many distinct things (for example: 4 different sounds).

  • Repeat with another sense and another number—get creative and have fun with it.

Make it yours

This practice is meant to be enjoyable, meditative, and supportive. Adjust what you need so it serves you. Let go of needing to “do it right.”

Some days you may stay with “S” for a while before moving forward. Other days you may breeze through and linger in “E.” And you can always return to “S” anytime to recalibrate.

Have Fun!
